My logo design Process
From creative brief to logo design
Project brief
Bristol Myers Squibb is an american multinational pharmaceutical company that develops innovative medicine for patients. I was contacts as a freelancer to build a logo for one of their regional science and technology global manufacturing teams.
My Role
I was requested to use my graphic design ability to translate drawings from a contest they held into a vector file solution. The contest did a lot of the work for me because their team really guided the visual solution, I just needed to add a few embellishments. Bristol already had a pretty well defined brand. The brand’s personality had a mass appeal standard, with a balance between the relationship of serious and playful qualities. The topic of healthcare and medicine is usually detailed to build trust. They offered a friendly voice when speaking to patients but had an authoritative syntax when talking about the impact of its pharmaceuticals. That is how they arrived at the anchor as a primary visual object because it represents safety and hope.
Breaking Down The Process
I started with a vector tracing technique that is pretty standard is this scenario. Sometimes you just have to let the club swing for you and just guide it. The shape builder too also came in handy so I could recreate the main emphasis of the logo in segments then join them altogether.
Logo iterations made
I wandered through some creative avenues before getting close to the final piece. I generally start off super simple to get a feel for different formats. The first couple of iterations felt a bit too plain Jane, especially after having conversations with my point of contact.
Arriving at the final draft
One of the things I really enjoyed about the final draft is that it inherited the main qualities of the first concept that was created in the contest. The multi-point gradient color of the anchor as detail of the knot wrapped around. It was a really fun experience, I enjoyed working with Alex and his team. He even showed me a sample of the small business sticker they made and how our work came to life! Glad I could bring a new fresh look to the global manufacturing team at Bristol Myers Squibb.
